On Mom-Guilt

mom guilt

In a circle of mamas, we all nod our heads in solidarity, when someone shares their “mom-guilt” moments.

We all have them!

And, we act as if it’s normal.

But, just because something is common, does not make it right or normal.

Have you ever had someone say to you, “You just need to give yourself some more grace”?

I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard this. 🙈

I’’d like to offer a tweak or two to this response, just to stretch us a little, sound good?

I know those who are responding this way are surely well-meaning.

First off, we RECEIVE grace from God.

He is rightly our judge.

If I give MYSELF grace, it’s implying I was rightly the judge.

Oof. That’s a big weight to carry.

That just creates more problems than it solves.

If I am feeling guilty about something, it’s likely because I AM GUILTY.

Let me show you how that’s looked in my life:

When I’ve felt guilty about not doing enough?

  • I have needed to repent of trying to control my own life.

When I’ve felt guilty about yelling at our kids?

  • I have needed to repent of anger, bitterness or resentment.

When I’ve felt guilty about not doing the thing I know would serve our family better?

  • I have needed to repent of laziness.

How might this look in your life?

  • Notice where your guilty feelings are stemming from.

  • Get honest with yourself. Are they connected to sin?

  • If so, go now and share that with God!

  • Turn from your sin + turn toward God! Let His kindness lead you toward repentance!

  • This is not about religion. It's about a sweet relationship with your Heavenly Father who designed you to walk hand-in-hand with Him.

Paul tells the believers in Rome that there is NO CONDEMNATION for those who are in Christ. (Romans 8:1)

Your guilt is absolved because of Jesus!!! DO YOU SEE?!

For the born again believer, GUILT IS NOT A WAY OF LIFE.

That somewhat “trendy” mom-guilt?

Don’t accept it.

Accepting it as normal is essentially spitting on the cross.

Vehemently reject it.

Know the freedom available to you in Christ.

And, park your tushy at His feet.

Gaze on Him.

Receive HIS grace over your life.

If you’re feeling guilt about something today, it’s because you are guilty. We all are.

THIS IS WHY THE GOSPEL IS GOOOOOOD NEWS!! 🙌 🙌 🙌

Sin leaves a gross residue everywhere.

It feels heavy and burdening.

I KNOW you’re ready to lighten that load.

Don’t ignore the guilt you’re feeling.

Let it lead you to the cross.

See it as an invitation to repent.

I promise there’s goodness on the other side!

Repentance is the first step to shedding guilt and beginning to live FREE. (2 Corinthians 7:10)

You are known + loved, friend.

💛 Caitlin
